Schuppers, MSc
Manon Schuppers received her Master of Science degree in
Animal Science at Wageningen University in the Netherlands
in 2002. She specialised in both quantitative veterinary
epidemiology and tropical animal husbandry. During a research
project on goat milk consumption and goat milk marketing
in The Gambia, West Africa, she gained field experience
on working within the limited infrastructure of developing
countries in implementing project activities. During an
externship at the Swiss Federal Veterinary Office in 2002,
she gained experience in applied epidemiology on national
level.
After graduation in 2002, Manon returned to the Swiss Federal
Veterinary Office and coordinated a pilot project to implement
a monitoring program for zoonotic pathogens in Swiss slaughterhouses.
Additionally, she completed an epidemiological analysis
of the prevalence of and risk factors for antimicrobial
resistance of Campylobacter coli in Swiss finishing
pigs.
Manon joined SAFOSO in April 2004 and has since worked on a wide variety of projects related to the control of animal and zoonotic pathogens. Currently she is responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of capacity building programs in the areas of WTO/SPS requirements, risk assessment and control of animal and zoonotic diseases in Eastern Europe, North Africa and South-East Asia. She is also responsible for the coordination and implementation of a research project in Switzerland that is focused on the development of a risk-based disease surveillance strategy for Trichinella spp. Manon was the epidemiologist of a Swiss expert mission team in 2007 that was responsible for advising the government of an Eastern European country on how to control the outbreak of a highly contagious pig disease.
